Why it made our lists
Gifts for teensWorth the splurge
A beginner telescope that uses a phone app to find planets, clusters and the Moon, so a teen does not need to know the constellations. It needs a recent phone, and city light limits the view.
Gifts for a dad who has everything
A beginner telescope that uses a phone app to point at planets and the Moon. For a curious dad with a dark backyard who never learned the constellations. It needs a recent phone.
A first telescope for a teen or adult who camps under dark skies but does not know the constellations. It needs a compatible phone, an iPhone XR or newer or Android 12 or newer, to guide it.
Science and STEM giftsWorth the splurge
A first telescope for a teen or adult who does not know the constellations: a phone app points them to planets and the Moon. Check their phone is new enough, and expect city light to limit the view.
What it is
A beginner refractor telescope with a phone dock that uses the StarSense app to recognize the sky and point to planets, clusters and the Moon. It includes two eyepieces and a 2x Barlow lens.
An 80 mm refractor telescope on a full-height manual tripod, with a phone dock that uses the StarSense app to guide you to objects by on-screen arrows. Because it shows an upright image, it also works for daytime nature viewing, not just the night sky. A red dot finder lets you use it without a phone. Celestron pitches it at beginners and the app includes tutorials.
