Why it made our lists
An 8 oz Tokoname side-handled kyusu, sold as a beginner pot for Japanese green tea. For a sencha drinker brewing for one or two. Left-handers need the separate left-handed version.
What it is
Tokoname-ware side-handled kyusu teapot, 8 oz, in a smooth black finish, sold by Ippodo as a beginner-friendly pot for Japanese green tea. A left-handed version is sold separately.
A small Japanese side-handled teapot in smooth black ceramic, made by hand in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture. You hold the straight handle and tip the pot to pour, and a fine ceramic filter built into the spout holds back loose leaves, so no separate strainer is needed. It holds about one or two cups, suited to sencha, gyokuro and bancha. Being handmade, each pot varies a little in colour and shape. A separate left-handed version is sold.
