Why it made our lists

  • Gifts for tweensBest on a budget

The standard Rubik's Cube, small enough for a stocking and the cheapest pick here. Good for a tween who wants to learn to solve it. A keen solver will soon want a faster speed cube.

  • Stocking stuffer ideas

The standard six-colour Rubik's Cube, small enough for any stocking. A cheap classic for a teen who likes puzzles. Speedcubers will find it stiff; this is for beginners.

What it is

The standard Rubik's Cube puzzle with six coloured faces. It is small enough for a pocket or stocking.

The standard 3x3 Rubik's Cube: six faces of nine coloured squares that twist on a central mechanism, with the goal of returning every face to a single colour. This current version swaps the old stickers for plastic tiles, so colours do not peel or fade, and the turning mechanism is designed to move more smoothly than older cubes. It is small enough for a bag or pocket and works as both a puzzle to learn and something to fidget with.
