Why it made our lists
Pirate-themed Catan that keeps the trading and drops the harder rules, in about 30 minutes. A good first strategy game, though a keen kid will want full Catan within a year or two.
What it is
A pirate-themed Catan for two to four players where kids collect resources and build hideouts in about 30 minutes. It keeps the trading idea while dropping the harder rules.
A simplified pirate-themed version of Catan for children. Players collect wood, goats, molasses and swords from a ring of islands, then spend them on ships and hideouts, while avoiding the Ghost Captain; the first to seven hideouts wins. It uses sturdy tiles instead of cards, the board shows dice faces instead of numbers, and there is a separate map for two players.
