Why it made our lists
Gifts for people who love to cook
A Japanese metal grater that turns ginger and garlic into a finer paste than western graters. A small gift for a cook who grates ginger often. Fibres stick, so a brush helps.
What it is
A Japanese oroshigane (oroshiki) metal grater that grates more finely than western graters, for ginger, garlic, wasabi, chilli or horseradish. Sold in small or medium size, boxed.
A flat Japanese oroshigane grater, a stainless steel plate covered in fine raised teeth with no holes through it. You rub ginger, garlic, wasabi or horseradish across the face and scrape the paste off the front, which gives a much finer result than a western box grater. It comes in two sizes, both small enough to keep in a drawer.
