For the dog that chews hard and gets bored fast. Long treats wedge in and the ridges grip them, so a chew lasts longer. Treats are not included, so tuck a few in the box.

The best pet gifts solve a daily annoyance for the owner: a bored dog, a wet dog, a cat with nowhere to nap. Start with a treat toy like the West Paw Qwizl for dogs or the Tuft + Paw window hammock for an indoor cat, then size up or down by budget.

#1Our top pick
West Paw · Pets
For the dog that chews hard and gets bored fast. Long treats wedge in and the ridges grip them, so a chew lasts longer. Treats are not included, so tuck a few in the box.
#2Best on a budget
Kazoo · Pets
A cheap rubber ball that works as a throw toy, a treat puzzle and a chew. Good for any Australian dog owner. Size up for a strong chewer, because no rubber toy is truly indestructible.
#3Worth the splurge
Tuft + Paw · Pets
For an indoor cat that spends all day watching birds. It mounts on glass with suction cups and is rated for cats up to 30 lb. Skip it if the windows are textured or hard to reach.
#5
Pride + Groom · Pets
For the owner who dreads muddy walks and bath days. Hand pockets give grip and the microfiber soaks up water fast. One size, so a big dog may need two passes.
#6
Muttluks · Pets
For a Canadian dog owner fighting road salt on winter sidewalks. Four light boots with non-skid soles. Get the size right, and expect the dog to need a few practice walks before it stops high-stepping.
#7
Halen Môn · Pets
An unscented balm for dry paws and noses after long or muddy winter walks. Small, cheap and used daily. If the paws are cracked or sore, the shop itself says to see a vet.
#8
Snooza · Pets
For a cat that burrows under blankets or hides in cupboards. A covered faux-fur cave with a non-slip base. Only the Oat colour was in stock when we checked the shop's page.
#9
Chilly Dogs · Pets
For a short-haired, small or senior dog facing a real Canadian winter. Fleece-lined with a harness hole and reflective piping. Measure the dog's back first, and keep it for snow, not rain.
#10
Wild One · Pets
For a friend with a new dog who still needs walking basics. A padded step-in harness and matching leash in one box. Ask for the dog's chest size before you buy.
#11
LISH · Pets
For a gentle dog that carries toys around the house. Made in London from certified cotton and it arrives in a gift bag. LISH says it is not a chew toy, so skip it for shredders.
#12
Feline Frenzy · Pets
A stocking gift for a cat that grabs and bunny-kicks, shaped like a guitar effects pedal, which lands well with a musician owner. Catnip does nothing for some cats, including many kittens and older cats.
#13
Grampians Goods Co. · Pets
For a dog that sleeps on the couch or rides in the car. A machine-washable blanket in mostly recycled wool, big enough to cover a cushion. Wool holds pet hair, so it needs regular shaking out.

#14
Lords & Labradors · Pets
For a small-dog owner who takes the dog on car trips. It works as a bed, carrier and car seat bed, and the cushion goes in the wash. Check the size; it only suits small dogs.

#15
RC Pets · Pets
For a friend who walks the dog in dark winter evenings. A six-foot soft-webbing leash with a reflective stitch line. You will need to guess the right width for the dog's size.
#16
Waggo · Pets
For the owner of a small or medium dog whose bowl skids across the floor. A heavy matte ceramic bowl with a wide base. Four cups is too small for large breeds.
#17
Tuft + Paw · Pets
An easy stocking gift for a cat owner: crunchy freeze-dried wild salmon, single protein. The page lists no full ingredient panel or pack weight, and fish-allergic cats should skip it.
#18
BeOneBreed · Pets
A small, sturdy ball toy for a friend's dog, designed in Quebec and made in Canada. Resistant is not indestructible, so a strong chewer still needs watching.
#19
Mimi & Munch · Pets
For a dog owner who reads labels. Australian-made mini biscuits with a short ingredient list, small enough to use as training rewards. They contain oats and coconut oil, so check for sensitivities.
#20
A small gift to get an indoor cat pouncing. The wobbling base and feathers keep it moving. Put it away once the feathers start to come loose.
#21
BC SPCA · Pets
For a pet lover whose own animals already have too many toys. The donation buys treats and toys for shelter animals in B.C. Check at checkout how the recipient finds out about it.

#22
Beco · Pets
For a dog that wrestles and chews soft toys. Tougher than regular plush and made from recycled materials, but still fabric, so supervise a heavy chewer.
#23
Wyze · Tech & gadgets
For an owner who worries about the dog or cat while at work. It pans the room, tracks motion and has two-way audio. Needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and longer cloud recording costs extra.
Most pet gifts fail because they are cute and solve nothing. Ask the owner one question in passing: what drives you mad about the dog or cat right now. The answer is usually boredom, mud, cold or a lack of somewhere to sleep, and each has a clear gift on this list.
A bored dog that chews needs a treat toy. The West Paw Qwizl and the Beco Boredom Buster both make food last longer, and the Kazoo Hide N Treat ball is the cheap version. A wet dog needs a drying towel; the Pride + Groom towel has hand pockets so the owner can grip and rub. A cold dog needs boots or a coat. A cat that hides needs a cave, like the Snooza Cat Pet Cave, or a perch with a view.
Almost every caveat on this list is about size. Harnesses, coats, boots and bowls only work if they fit, so get the numbers before you buy. For the Wild One walk kit you need the dog's chest measurement. For the Chilly Dogs coat you need the length of the back. For Muttluks boots you need paw size, and a guess here means a return.
Chew strength matters just as much for toys. Plush toys like the LISH squirrel are for gentle dogs that carry things around. The Beco sloth is tougher but still fabric. For a dog that destroys toys in minutes, stick to rubber: the Qwizl, the Boredom Buster or the OBEE! Orb, and size up. No shop on this list calls any toy indestructible, and you should not either.
Cats are harder. Some ignore catnip, some refuse collars, and plenty will sit in the box instead of the bed. Treats and a wobble toy are low-risk. A window hammock or a cave is a bigger bet, so it suits an owner who already knows the cat's habits.
Under $25 covers most stocking gifts: paw balm, a rubber ball, cat treats, a leash or a single toy. These are safe for a coworker or a neighbour with a dog, because they get used up or chewed and nobody has to find space for them.
The $25 to $75 range buys gear the owner would put off buying: the drying towel, the ceramic bowl, the walk kit, a winter coat in smaller sizes. This is the right band for a close friend or family member.
Over $75 should only go on something the owner has said they want, like the Tuft + Paw window hammock, the Lords & Labradors travel bed or a wool blanket. Big pet purchases are personal, and a large cat bed the cat ignores is a large waste.
Do not switch someone's dog food as a gift. If you give a food item, give treats, and keep them small. Food sensitivities are common, so read the label: the Mimi & Munch biscuits contain oats and coconut oil, and the Tuft + Paw treats are fish.
Skip scented products unless you know the dog. Some dogs hate them, and a few owners do too. Skip collars for indoor cats. And remember the toy is often really for the owner, so pair it with something for them, like the paw balm or a towel, when the budget allows.
If the owner already has a home full of toys, the BC SPCA Treats & Toys donation sends the money to shelter animals instead. It is a good office gift for a known animal person.
Many of these shops are small, single-country brands, so check where they ship before you order. Winter gear sells out as the cold arrives: several sizes on this list were already gone when we checked the shop's pages. Buy boots and coats in early autumn, and leave room for an exchange if the fit is wrong.
